Master's Programme in Cinema Studies, 120 hp
Master's Programme in Cinema Studies, 120 hp, 120.0 credits
avancerad, Heltid
The master’s programme addresses the study of cinema and the moving image, and is taught by members of the Department of Cinema Studies and visiting professors who conduct cutting-edge research in the histories, aesthetics, and cultures of cinema and the moving image. The programme is designed to advance knowledge and understanding of cinema and the moving image through two core courses on theories, methods and research skills which all students are encouraged to complete during their first year of study. In addition, students may take optional courses (equivalent to 45 hp) during the two-year programme which may address national, transnational, and intercultural considerations with regard to the moving image; screen cultures in transition; questions of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity in the study of audiovisual media; and cinema ‘before’ sound. At least one of the option courses offered in each academic year focuses on Swedish or Nordic cinema. In addition, students are required to complete a thesis at master’s level during their second year, for which supervision is offered by members of the Department. Students may also take courses in research methods and academic writing in English offered by the Faculty of Humanities, and may complement courses taken in the Department with courses offered at master’s level in the University of partner universities. The programme is supported by the resources of the Swedish Film Institute, the National Archive for Sound and Image, the Ingmar Bergman Foundation, museums, and libraries, and may lead to creative, administrative and/or policy-making careers in film, television, publishing, and archives.
