Moving Images and Gender

Taught in English, first cycle level, first half of the semester. Recommended also for exchange students and international free movers interested in moving images and gender studies. Lectures and screenings in Filmhuset.

The course provides the students with tools to understand and critically analyze film and other moving images from a gender perspective. Drawing on various film and media theories that engage with issues of gender, the course offers an orientation in the field’s central debates, methods and concepts—in this way, the course illuminates a wide spectrum of concerns relating to gender, body, and sexuality in film and other moving images. Students will explore close readings of audiovisual modes of representation and address as well as contextual aspects relating to production and reception.

  • Course structure

    The course consists of lectures, seminars and screenings for 10 weeks - first half of the semester. All take place in Filmhuset by Gärdet in Stockholm.

    You participate two days per week. Typically a day in Filmhuset starts off with a screening for around two hours followed by a two hour lecture.

    Everything is done in English.

    Teaching format

    Along with viewings that range across various audiovisual genres and forms, the course consists of lectures (in English), discussions on literature and viewings (in English), a reading diary (in English) and a final written assignment.

    This course run for first half of the semster, the other half we recommend FV1017 Postcolonial Perspectives on Audio Visual Media, 15 credits.

    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
