Master programme in Latin American Studies, 120 hp

The program gives a wide orientation in contemporary social science research on Latin America. The relation between area studies and interdisciplinarity is given a central place in the theoretical and methodological studies. Courses at the master’s level are given on a full time basis and cover interdisciplinary scientific theory and method as well as give an orientation of the current social scientific research on Latin America. The program offers a combination of compulsory courses and individually chosen courses. Within the framework of individually chosen courses, there is an opportunity of spending a semester at a Latin American university or doing fieldwork/internship in Latin America. Alternatively, students may also elect to take courses of their choice at Swedish universities. The program ends with an independent project of 30 credits which provides opportunities for both thematic and regional specialization. The program is designed to establish a solid foundation for students who plan to work with Latin America, in areas such as administration, international organizations, development co-operation, media and journalism.
