Master's Programme in Evolutionary Biology, 120 hp
Masterprogram i evolutionsbiologi, 120 hp, 120.0 credits
avancerad, Full time
The field of evolutionary biology studies the processes of change that have led to the enormous diversity of living organisms that populate the Earth today, processes that have created unbelievably complex biological organisms from a simple chemical origin. Differences between species can be understood in the light of evolution, partly as a result of adaptation to different environments through natural selection, and partly as a result of random events such as climate change and meteor impact. At the same time, the evolution of all species from one common origin can also explain the major fundamental similarities that are found between even distantly related organisms, such as the similarities of the genetic code, and those of the molecular “toolbox” of cells. Thus, evolutionary biology stands for the common theories that unite the whole of biology. The Master’s Programme in Evolutionary Biology provides wide-ranging opportunities for students to tailor their education to obtain the profile desired. A final degree project in evolutionary biology is compulsory, as are the courses in Biological Statistics and Experimental Design and Science in Biological Research and Investigation. These courses are taken in parallel with the degree project. The course in Evolutionary Ecology is also a compulsory part of the programme, allowing us to learn more about the evolution of adaptation to the environment from internationally renowned scientists in the field. The student otherwise can select courses in, for example, biodiversity, ethology , systematics, zoological reproductive biology or plant-animal interactions. The programme is primarily a preparative programme for research education in evolutionary biology and related subjects (ecology, ethology, systematics), but it is also an admirable background for, for example, research administration, scientific journalism, and for certain posts available at authorities.
