This course provides an introduction to human rights from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. The course starts with a philosophical historical introduction on human rights where some key thinkers and traditions of thought are presented and analyzed. Then the course addresses the emergence of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its historical predecessor, such as the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen (1789) and the American Declaration of Independence (1776). The subsequent development of human rights in the form of new declarations and conventions will also be highlighted. Special focus will be on the current human rights challenges with a special emphasis on Turkey, the Middle East and East Asia and the human rights situation in the Islamic and Confucian traditions of thought.

Are you interested in human beings and society? How we function individually and together, what drives us, our learning processes, how rules and laws have been established, and how we interact with each other? If that is the case we have a lot to offer. This area of interest covers anything from Pedagogy, Psychology and Gender Studies, to Statistics, Political Science, Law and many other subjects. Their common denominator is the relation between human beings and society, independent analytical thinking and often an international perspective.
