This course discusses outlines along which ethno-nationalist and Islamist identities on national and regional levels have been constructed in the Middle East since the 19th century to the present time. Both identities emerged by advocating the idea of nation/umma and demanding national independence and sovereignty, primarily in cooperation with but — since the 1960s — in direct opposition to each other. The interaction and conflict will be covered throughout political, social and economical upheavals during the 20:th century to the present time, focusing on themes, such as democracy, secularization, anti-westernism and gender.
