Description
The course examines global and local conceptions of Japanese popular culture through the lens of anime/animation studies and games studies. It questions the relevance of the very concept of ‘popular culture’ for the 21st century from the perspective of recent Japan-oriented media studies. While the Manga Studies course (JKA918) puts an emphasis on close readings and media-specific analysis, this course highlights issues that recur across popular media, such as playfulness, conventionality and critique, otaku, “boys love” and “media mix”.
