This course will give you a deeper theoretical and practical understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the function of the nervous system in health and disease. Emphasis will be placed on the interplay between glia cells and neurons, the role of cytokines and neurotrophic factors, and how these molecules regulate gene expression and thus different functions in cells of the nervous system. The course will cover glial and neuronal functions/dysfunction in response to physical trauma, as well as in neuropsychiatric, neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. The problems and possibilities with neuronal regeneration will also be discussed. Different methods and models that can be used to study the nervous system in health and disease is also covered in the course.

The course consist of lectures, laboratory exercises and a practical project work that runs throughout the course. Attendance at laboratory exercises and the practical project is obligatory.

The course literature consists of lecture power point presentations and recent scientific review articles that will be handed out in connection to lectures.

Science and mathematics help us understand how the world around us is connected – from the origin and structure of the universe, to the development and function of humanity and all other organisms on earth. Scientific knowledge makes it possible to critically examine the credibility of information in different areas of everyday life, society, and the media. As a scientist or mathematician, you will be attractive on a large job market that covers all parts of society and includes everything from pure technology companies to environment and healthcare, as well as research.
