This course covers the history of spoken Latin, Vulgar Latin, through primary texts from the archaic period to the reign of Charlemagne, from the comedies of Plautus to the oaths of Strasbourg. Focus will be on the linguistic analysis concerning the phonological and morphological development of the language as well as changes concerning syntax and vocabulary. The beginnings of the Romance languages will also be included.
