The course provides knowledge about basic statistical methods and statistical tools used in linguistic research. The characteristics, usability, and pros and cons of the various statistical methods are discussed. Implementation of statistical methods in software is an important focus of the course.
The areas primarily concerned are: - descriptive statistics; measures of location and dispersion, types of scales - the basics of probability theory; the concept of probability; conditional probability, statistical independence - probability distribution - methods of inference; sampling, estimation, significance analysis, confidence intervals and tests, power functions, statistical model - analysis of qualitative data; chi square analysis - regression and correlation - analysis of variation (ANOVA)
