The relation between language and society is the focus of this course, which visits a number of historic and prehistoric settings.

The course deals with the interaction between societal change, linguistic change and meta-linguistic change (such as changes in language names). A recurrent theme is the relation between spoken languages and writing.

After taking this course, among other things you will be able to account for changes in the situation of language from the stone age until modern times, to state diachronic linguistic processes and to reflect upon the connections between societal change and linguistic change.
