Russian

Russian is the biggest of the Slavic Languages and is the mother tongue of about 170 million people. Today Russian is widely used outside Russia as well. It is spoken by most of the people in East Europe and Central Asia. Learning Russian enables you to explore the fascinating Russian culture that is alien, but at the same time has a great deal in common with our own culture. Russia is one of our closest neighbours and its developent is of great importance for Sweden. Knowing Russian, you can contribute to the understanding of Russian society in a very dynamic, yet, contradictory phase of development. Russia has rapidly turned into a great economic power. Education in economy, law or journalism will gain from a knowledge of Russian. Our ex-students work as translators, interpreters and journalists. You can also find them among teachers, researchers and librarians. After two terms of Russian studies you will be able to read Russian literature in the original, write, understand and be understood in Russian. You will also have a basic knowledge about Russian history and society and about Russian literary history. At Russian III you will get more in-depth knowledge of Russian cultural phenomena in a historical perspective. Students can choose one of three sub-courses: literary analysis, language history, Russian society and economy. At the Bachelor level the students write a thesis. The subject is chosen by the student and the thesis is expected to demonstrate the student’s ability to produce a scholarly treatment of a subject in a particular field of research. The Russian courses are partly taught over the web with the help of a study program called SmartWord that was created at our department. In order to study Russian I you need 3 years of prevoius studies in Russian in the upper secondary school. If you do not have the necessary background there is always an opportunity to study “Russian for beginners”. Please note that the evening course in Russian (RyI-RyIII) is three terms long. Russian for beginners (evening, part time) is given part-time over two terms. More information about part time courses can be found at www.slav.su.se/rydel Some obligatory courses may be given in the evening at all levels. Current information about the courses can be found at www.slav.su.se/kurser
