Astronomy, Degree Project

The degree project aims to give you both insights and experience with scientific research. Key moments are the planning, execution and reporting of your research project. You will produce a scientific report and present your research results orally in a scientific seminar.

This course normally constitutes the completion of your bachelor studies in astronomy. The degree project can be seen as an internship in a research group during which you will execute a research project but will also become part of the group and experience what it is like to work in a research environment. The project will contain new research even though the time frame is of course limited to 10 weeks.
As a part of the degree project you will also participate in the course “Science Ethics” (“Vetenskaplighet”) in which you will learn about the different ethical aspects associated with scientific research.

  • Course structure

The course is given every term and can be taken either as a full time or 50% course. It is part of the bachelor programme in astronomy but can also be read as a separate course if you fulfill the eligibility requirements. The research project will make use of English but the course “Science Ethics” is given in Swedish.
Together with your supervisor you will produce a description of the planned research project which has to be approved by the examination group.

    Teaching format

The research internship does not involve any scheduled teaching as your project will be individual. You will meet your supervisor for at least one hour every week to receive guidance. The course “Science Ethics” consists of four seminars.

    Assessment

The examination will be in the form of both a written scientific report and an oral presentation in the form of  a scientific seminar. The course “Science Ethics” uses a written exam.

    Examiner

Your main examiner will be one of the members of the examination group which at the moment consists of Alexis Brandeker, Dan Kiselman and Claes Fransson.

  • Schedule

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
  • Course literature

Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.

Every research project has its own literature list which you will initially be given by your supervisor and later on will expand on your own. This literature can consist of (parts of) textbooks and scientific articles. The course “Science Ethics” uses the compendium ”Konsten att vara vetenskaplig” written by Hansson, Sven-Ove (2007)
