Swedish Film and Television Culture
Taught in English, first cycle level. Recommended for exchange students and international free movers interested in Swedish cinema and television. The course explores the moving image in Swedish culture and society. Lectures and screenings in Filmhuset.
The course provides an overview of the role of the moving image in Swedish culture and society during the last 100 years, a period when moving image culture became increasingly more important. Swedish film and television culture is presented in relation to international trends and developments in the field. Various approaches are considered, including the analysis of formal concerns combined with different socio-cultural perspectives as well as entertainment genres and avant-garde experiment. Industrial practice and film analysis are discussed with a focus on individual artists. Attention is also paid to case studies dealing with questions of criticism and reception.
This course is given entirely in English and takes you on a journey through the Swedish landscape within television and film. The course can be used as complementary studies in Cinema Studies in a degree and is also taken by many exchange students and program students.

Course structure
The course with ca 40 students run for 10 weeks and has lectures and screenings.
All classes in "Filmhuset" by Gärdet in Stockholm
Screening in the big theatre "Bio Victor" with live piano to silent film and many more screenings in theatre Bio Mauritz.
In order to pass the course, students are expected to have:
- basic knowledge of moving image media in a Swedish context;
- familiarity with different methods for critical analysis of film and television material;
- familiarity with the main features of current research on Swedish film and television.Teaching format
The course is taught in English only.
Teaching consists of lectures and seminars as well as screenings of film and other media material. Lectures and seminars are compulsory. The teaching is in English. For more information see the course description.
Build your full time semester with this course
The course is 15 ECTS credits and can for instance be combined with full time 15 credit courses that run second half of the semester to get 30 ECTS in total full time.
Assessment
The course is examined through a home exam, written assignments and oral presentations. For more detailed information, see the course description.

b. Grades will be set according to a seven-point grading scale related to the learning objectives of the course: A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), D (satisfactory), E (adequate), Fx (fail, some additional work required), F (fail, much more work required).
c. Students will be informed of the written assessment criteria when the course starts.
d. In order to pass the course, students must receive a grade E or higher on all examination assignments, complete all mandatory course elements, and meet the attendance requirement of 80%. The principles for weighing individual exam assignments are described in the grading criteria. Under special circumstances, the examiner may, after consulting with the coordinating teacher, grant the student an exemption from mandatory course elements or mandatory assignments. The student may then be assigned a replacement assignment.
e. For each occasion the course is given, at least two examination opportunities must be offered during the semester the course is given. At least one examination opportunity shall also be offered during the semester or year in which the course is not given. Students with a final grade of E or higher may not retake the examination to attain a higher grade. Students who receive the grade Fx or F twice by the same examiner are entitled to have another examiner appointed for the next examination, opportunity unless there are special reasons to the contrary. Such requests should be made to the department board.
f. The completion of a supplementary assignment in order to convert the grade Fx into a passing grade may be permitted if the student is close to meeting the criteria for a passing grade. The assignment should be submitted within two weeks of the examiner notifying the student of the need to complete a supplementary assignment. Adequate completions will be graded using the grades A–E.
