Latin America in a Global World

The course aims to provide increased understanding of Latin America and its history, politics, finances and culture from a global perspective. This refers to an understanding of how links to other parts of the world have influenced Latin America, as well as how the region has influenced other parts of the world. The course applies a historical perspective, focusing on analyses of transnational networks and creation of international systems in the post-colonial age. It addresses the emergence and changes of global relationships, and how this has impacted local conditions in Latin America. The course gives the students an understanding of continuity and change, and how trade and goods have influenced society, state building and cultures. Central elements of the course include links between the past and the present, in addition to relationships between the local and the international.
