Inequality, Gender and Power in Latin America

Latin America has been described as a machist region, at the same time, it has become one of the regions of the world, where issues as the right for abortion and a feminist foreign policy exists in several countries. We focus on these themes as well as on income distribution

Start of the Summer Semester 2023

This course provides an introduction to the emergence of inequality in Latin America and the Caribbean, and traces continuity and change in the relations between gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity and ‘race’. These power relations are studied in the light of historical slavery and the development of the nation. In addition, the
course unit discusses how political movements in the region have taken on issues of power, inequality and change, as well as the challenges facing Latin America today with regard to the maintenance of human rights.
