The course is a 10-week course and deals with atmospheric particles and their influence on cloud properties and climate.

Purpose and learning objectives After successful completion of this course the student will be able to describe the chemical and physical properties of atmospheric particles, their influence on atmospheric chemistry, clouds, precipitation and climate, work with process models and be be able to use sampling and measurement instrumentation.

Content and teaching methods The course focuses on aerosols and clouds which currently cause the largest uncertainties in model predictions of future climate. You will study the life cycle of aerosols, their sources, sinks and role in atmospheric circulation; aerosol-cloud interactions, climate effects and their uncertainty; aerosols and clouds in process and climate models; experiments and observations. Aerosols as climate indicators in snow and ice cores, their role in ozone depletion, and for the water cycle will also be touched upon.

The course consists of lectures, project work, exercises, and seminars.

The course is normally given in English unless all participants are Swedish speaking.

Environmental Science

Climate changes, environmental pollutants, ozone depletion, poor air and water quality, changes in landscape, waste disposal, depletion of natural resources, loss of ecosystem services, resilience and biological diversity, etc. The list of environmental problems is long as we humans use the resources nature has to offer without knowing or paying attention to the consequences. Environmental Science is a multi-disciplinary subject which applies knowledge from both the natural and social sciences to identify, understand, prevent, and deal with environmental problems caused by human activities. The Bachelor and Master Programs in Environmental Science offer an education in a natural science with environmental relevance and a background to the societal aspects of environmental problems.
