Where in the world do environmental pollutants go? Why into the ground and not into the air? Why is one substance taken up by vegetation and fauna while another is not?

Purpose and learning objectives The purpose of this course is to give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge of organic environmental chemistry and to develop your ability to understand, describe, calculate, and devise hypotheses about how molecular interactions and biogeochemical processes control the distribution, exposure, and biological uptake of all kinds of anthropogenic organic substances in the environment.

Content and teaching methods The course focuses on the issues of how molecular properties of organic environmental pollutants affect their distribution between air, water, earth, sediment, and biota. The course consists of lectures, exercises, and seminars.

The course is given in English unless all participants are Swedish speaking.

Environmental Science

Climate changes, environmental pollutants, ozone depletion, poor air and water quality, changes in landscape, waste disposal, depletion of natural resources, loss of ecosystem services, resilience and biological diversity, etc. The list of environmental problems is long as we humans use the resources nature has to offer without knowing or paying attention to the consequences. Environmental Science is a multi-disciplinary subject which applies knowledge from both the natural and social sciences to identify, understand, prevent, and deal with environmental problems caused by human activities. The Bachelor and Master Programs in Environmental Science offer an education in a natural science with environmental relevance and a background to the societal aspects of environmental problems.
