The Master’s Programme in Language Science with a Specialisation in English (English Linguistics) provides an in-depth two-year course of study of the core areas of English linguistics: phonology, syntax, semantics, and Old and Middle English, as well as academic English, with optional courses in, for example, sociolinguistics. You will be trained in independent and critical work on linguistic issues, and you will improve your competence in the analysis of language data.

The programme aims to extend and develop students’ knowledge in their chosen field of study, as well as to strengthen their inter-disciplinary knowledge of scientific theory, ethics and research methodology. The training consists of compulsory courses that are common to the whole programme, compulsory courses in the main field of study, as well as optional courses from a pool of courses offered by departments from the Faculty of Humanities. Your work with the Master’s thesis will develop your ability to conduct a linguistic investigation, analyse and discuss your observed data, and produce a scientific text in adequate English.

The programme, which provides detailed knowledge and skills, may serve as preparation for Third Level studies (PhD level) in English linguistics, or for a professional career in connection with language: in schools and higher education, work in archives and museums, libraries, publishing companies, domestic and international administration (e.g. in the EU), journalism, interpretation and translation.

Do you want to learn how to master English?

Between 350 and 400 million people speak English as a native language, and at least as many people use the language as an official second language.

What will you, as a student, gain from studying English at the university level? You will gain knowledge about the structure of the language and a deeper insight into the culture, literature and history of the English-speaking countries, at the same time as you improve your ability to actively use English substantially.

English will provide you with insights into basic English linguistics, oral and written proficiency, plus an introduction to English literature and culture. You will get the opportunity to practise your skills in reading and analysing texts, as well as writing essays and making presentations in English.

English II deepens your understanding of both linguistics and literary studies. In addition, a 7.5 HEC elective course will offer you the opportunity to study an area of English studies more closely under the tutelage of a specialist in that area.

When you study the BA course in English, you continue your specialization by choosing more courses in linguistics and literary studies, and you will also carry out a 15 HEC degree project.

With the English magister course, you make a choice between linguistics and literary studies, and the course gives you subject-specific qualifications for applying to the PhD programme.

English can also be studied in career-based programmes for a magister degree or a degree in education, and also for further studies in translation.

In the global world of today, knowledge of English is essential, regardless of what profession you choose. Proficiency in English is vital for careers in international companies and organizations, like the EU and the UN. The central position of English ensures that the demand for teachers in the subject will remain high.
