The course treats the historical background, growth and transition of the global fashion industry over the last 200 years, focusing on the relationship between production, distribution and consumption of fashion and fashion goods. Three major developments are central to this process: the industrial revolution during the 18th and 19th centuries, the deregulation of national textile and garment industries in Western Europe during the 1970s, and the current deregulation of textile import quotas within the EU and USA.

Fashion Studies

Fashion studies critically analyses the role of fashion in society. Until recently fashion has been a subject neglected at university level, and research in the area has been partly pursued through association with textile collections in museums of cultural history or through other disciplines in the university.

Today, fashion is a growing area of international study, and research in fashion has become an important academic area. The study of fashion can be seen globally from a variety of different perspectives. It can include the study of fashion as seen on the catwalk, in the street, in the home, at work, on a daily basis or in more formal situations.

As a student on the introductory course in fashion studies at Stockholm University you will learn how to analyse fashion as a social process in a variety of ways. Through continuous training, you will learn to speak and write about fashion from an academic perspective. Fashion studies is the central area of study if you wish to have a career in the fashion industry, or continue research at post-graduate level.
