Translation Studies, Master's Program, Specialization in Conference Interpreting, 120 ECTS

This programme prepares the student for the profession of conference interpreter, particularly for work in EU institutions, and for advanced academic studies. Conference interpreting is studied in three interpreting skills courses. In year 1, basic interpreting skills are taught (30 hec) and during year 2, these interpreting skills are taught in two courses (15 hec each) and thus further developed. Together, the three courses (60 hec) aim at developing the level of competence that is required for working as an interpreter for EU institutions. You will learn consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills from two languages to Swedish. Practical exercises alternate with lectures on note-taking techniques, interpreting strategies and meeting techniques. The exercises are conducted by experienced conference interpreters and teachers. Lectures on the organisation and political agenda of the EU are also given as part of the courses. You will learn to analyse texts, statements and discourse based on language situation, function and style. You will also gain knowledge in and practical experience of how to use relevant information sources and terminological aids in an effective manner, and learn how to compile the adequate terminology for different specialist areas. In the second year, 30 hec of the remaining 60 hec are options. You can either choose to continue the professional interpreter education or switch to more theoretical courses. If you decide to switch to theoretical courses, you are free to choose as long as the courses are deemed relevant for the programme, and you can take them either at the Institute for Interpretation and Translation Studies or at other university departments. In order to gain entrance to the 30 hec interpreting skills courses of the second year, you have to pass a diagnostic test, which is given during term 2. The programme also includes compulsory courses in Translation Studies, including research on interpreting, and in the theory of science as well as in academic English. You will write two independent research essays. For these, you can choose between two alternatives. You can either produce an interpretation of your own and conduct a scholarly analysis of it, or you can write an entirely theoretical thesis.
