The Master’s Programme in Middle Eastern Studies is an interdisciplinary program that provides in-depth knowledge of the Middle Eastern and North African societies, as well as area studies as an academic discipline.

The program has two study paths; Arabic and Area studies.

Study path 1 (Arabic) is aimed at students who have already studied Arabic and provides in-depth training in the Arabic language by developing the student’s ability to use Arabic source material in scientific analysis.

Study path 2 (Area studies) is aimed at students who have not studied Arabic or want to focus on regional studies and provides advanced studies in Middle Eastern and North African societies.

The program’s common courses deals with both Area studies in general and the Middle East and North Africa specifically, as well as scientific methodology and academic writing. The program also offers students the opportunity to select a number of courses in other subjects. Within the framework of the elective courses, the student can choose to do an internship, field studies and study abroad at a university in the Middle East and North Africa region.

The program prepares students for work within the private sector, the government, international organisations, research and development, as well as media and journalism, which requires in-depth knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa and/or good knowledge of the Arabic language. The program also provides eligibility for studies at graduate level.

Are you interested in human beings and society? How we function individually and together, what drives us, our learning processes, how rules and laws have been established, and how we interact with each other? If that is the case we have a lot to offer. This area of interest covers anything from Pedagogy, Psychology and Gender Studies, to Statistics, Political Science, Law and many other subjects. Their common denominator is the relation between human beings and society, independent analytical thinking and often an international perspective.

Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are regions in transition. With an increased interest in democracy, economic reforms and a growing trade with the outside world, the region is more relevant than ever. In Sweden there is also a large number of immigrants from the region, which contributes to an increased awareness of the developments in the Middle East and North Africa. As a trading partner the region is important and there is a need for people who not only specialize in for example finance and media, but also are familiar with MENA’s history and culture. Middle Eastern and North African Studies can be taken from beginner’s level to undergraduate and graduate level. All lectures are generally held in the evenings and all courses can be taken as online courses, with certain attendance requirements at the higher levels. Studies can also be combined with studies in Arabic. In addition to this, introductory courses in Persian and Hebrew are given. Middle Eastern and North African Studies are especially relevant for those who want to work, or already have a job, in a field such as public administration, industry, commerce, media and tourism, where knowledge of Middle Eastern and North African culture and politics is required.
