This programme is aimed at students who are interested in sign language and interpreting. No prior knowledge of Swedish Sign Language is required. The programme is offered in collaboration between the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies and the Department of Linguistics/Sign Language Section at Stockholm University. The programme comprises a combination of sign language courses and courses focusing on interpreting between Swedish Sign Language and spoken Swedish. The first year is dedicated to theoretical and practical courses in sign language and courses about the sign language community in Sweden and the rest of the world. In the second year, you will improve your knowledge of and skills in sign language. In addition, you will be introduced to sign language interpreting and technical language as a field of study, as well as to the professional conditions and ethics of interpreters. At the end of the second year, you will choose to specialise in either sign language or sign language interpreting. In the third year, you will focus on your chosen specialisation and improve your knowledge of and skills in sign language and interpreting. You will also be given the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in environments where sign language is used. In the sixth and final semester, you will carry out a degree project in sign language or interpreting, depending on your specialisation. You will choose a topic for your degree project in accordance with your chosen specialisation. The Bachelor’s Programme in Sign Language and Interpreting is a newly established programme at Stockholm University. Graduating from this programme creates an opportunity to become authorised as a Swedish Sign Language interpreter.
