Stockholm is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of arbitration, academically and in practice. The Master of International Commercial Arbitration Law (ICAL) law program has established a global reputation and topped international rankings for specialized LL.M. programs. During the past decade more than 300 graduates from about 70 countries have enriched their careers and expanded their networks through participating in this rigorous academic program. Stockholm hosts numerous arbitrations and is the home to one of the most active and respected arbitration institutes, the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. The highly developed arbitration community in Stockholm provides opportunities for students to learn from experienced practitioners, respected arbitrators, and visiting professors. These elements make Stockholm a natural place to engage in an intellectually vigorous study of both the theory and practice of international commercial arbitration.

Stockholm University has developed a unique program led by Dr. Patricia Shaughnessy. The program uses a variety of teaching formats, emphasizes student participation in the learning process, and provides opportunities for students to apply theory in simulated arbitration exercises. Students from a broad range of backgrounds participate in a dynamic learning experience where the multifaceted aspects of arbitration are considered from a range of scholarly and comparative perspectives and always with an inquiring mind and a hands-on, problem-solving approach.

The program features contributions from prominent academics and renowned practitioners. The interactive and dynamic learning approach provides students with opportunities to develop presentation and practical skills and also takes students out of the classroom. Participants attend seminars at law firms, take part in international arbitration conferences, and visit the court and arbitral institutes that support the international arbitration.

Students actively put theory into practice. Participants complete a mock arbitration, following an international dispute from beginning to end by filing a Request for Arbitration and other written submissions, collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses, holding hearings, and issuing a final award. Students also hone legal research and writing skills by preparing for and producing a master thesis on a topic in international arbitration. Thesis writing seminars enable students to cultivate skills as scholars and focus on developing a research project, crafting a thesis proposal, and writing effectively and clearly. Many students use the thesis as a springboard to pursue academic careers or choose to ultimately publish the thesis.

All applicants must complete their application with the following: 1) Statement of Purpose; 2) CV; 3) Letters of recommendation; 4) Documented proficiency in English (TOEFL 575/250/90, or IELTS, 6.5 (no section below 5.5)).
