The Master Programme in European Law offered at Stockholm University is a one-year course of study. It is open to postgraduate students with a degree in law, wishing to expand their knowledge of European law. The principal topic of study is the legal system of the European Union.

The courses consist mainly of seminars and are aimed at providing the students with skills necessary for their future work as either practitioners or researchers of European law. This is achieved by teaching the students various ways in which to identify problems and generate solutions. Issues of practical interest are thus interwoven with a scholastic look on of various legal problems. This approach requires active participation on the part of the student in the form of a number of papers that have to be submitted during the year, involvement in case studies and participation in the annual Moot Court Competition, where outstanding students are given the opportunity to represent the University in the international Moot Court Competition. Normally, only around 30 students are admitted each year.

The academic year begins at the end of August and ends at the beginning of June. Course work starts with Constitutional and Institutional Law and progresses to European Commercial Law. The Spring semester starts with European Competition Law. During the second half of the Spring semester, emphasis is placed on the master thesis. Students will focus on an individual topic under the guidance of a supervisor. The thesis must be completed by the end of the term. The studies are carried out on a full-time basis, making attendance at lectures and seminars mandatory.
