In the autumn 2000 the mapping of the complete human genom, one of the major scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century, was completed. It has been compared to the introduction of the periodical system in chemistry. However, this is only the beginning! Now that we have the code we have to learn how to interpret it. Using advanced mathematical, statistical and computational methods, scientists can now study the function of the genes and how they interact with each other. This is only one example where mathematics, statistics and computer science are becoming more and more important within biology and medicine. Other examples are modelling of how genetic diseases are inherited within families and determination of the three-dimensional structure of large biomolecules. Many experts think that this process will continue and that biology and medicine are the main areas where applied mathematics will develop the most in the 21st century. The programme is directed towards those who are interested in mathematical subjects and want to understand the molecular biological and evolutionary processes. The demand in the scientific community of students with this competence is large. There is also a great interest from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. The programme starts with a fundamental block of courses of 120 credits that gives the basic knowledge in the five different subjects. Then there is an elective part of 60 credits where there is a possibility to study specialized courses like for instance bioinformatics, dynamical systems and neurobiology. There is also a degree project of 15 credits where you get an opportunity to apply your knowledge to a problem within the life sciences. The programme ends with a bachelor’s degree with specialization in mathematics or mathematical statistics.
