Geology is the science of the Earth – looking at its origin and composition, the processes that transform the Earth’s crust and how organisms developed over time. The training starts with basic geology. You will learn about large-scale processes such as plate tectonics, mountain building, volcanism, earthquakes, tsunamis and also the carbon cycle, minerals and rocks. The geological time scale – how it is constructed and its large-scale subdivisions based on changes of the Earth’s inorganic and organic development through time – will also be investigated. In the second year the emphasis is on applications and methods, learning the tools you will need to work out in the field and in laboratories. The last year deepens your knowledge and skills in the institution’s research and applied studies. You end the program with an independent project. In order to get as much reality-based training as possible, the theoretical studies are interspersed with field excursions and laboratory experiments. As a geologist, you have an international labor market to look forward to. Today, mining, oil and exploration companies as well as construction and civil engineering firms are major employers, but geologists are also hired in consulting firms, county boards, municipalities, universities and other government agencies.
