Information and communication technology (ICT) has become a key factor in global development. A rapid expansion of infrastructure as well as services and applications has made ICT an essential part of today’s societies—both in developing and developed countries.

ICT4D is a new, interdisciplinary field that studies the use of technological innovation for socio-economic development. At Stockholm University, ICT4D follows a rights-based approach to development, with an emphasis on gender as well as environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Graduates of this programme will find positions in highly dynamic environments of ICT4D, including international organisations, NGOs, government agencies and global businesses. Graduates may also enter PhD programmes in order to pursue a research career.

The first semester introduces students to the field of ICT4D, research methods, and ICT infrastructure. The second semester covers topics such as project management, ICT security, mobile technology, green ICT, and innovation and entrepreneurship. The third semester is aimed at specialization in a specific ICT4D topic, such as e-health, e-learning, e-governance, and e-business. In the fourth semester, students will undertake an independent research project and submit the work in a M.Sc. thesis.

This Programme is an online programme based on open courseware. It is the only open program of its kind globally, designed for students from around the world. The Programme is sponsored by The Swedish Program for ICT in Devel-oping Regions (Spider), a resource center for ICT4D based at DSV, Stockholm University.
