What are the main social problems of urban areas? Poverty or social exclusion? Racism or failing integration of ethnic minorities? Teenage pregnancies and school dropout or failing education? Families with problems or weak social networks? The varying definitions of social problems and their solutions have direct consequences for conceptions of the role of professionals working in urban areas. Social problems today require an integrative approach and collaboration between social workers and other parties. Starting, developing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and legitimating social policy and social projects are therefore important professional competencies. This master of social work program aims to study the ways in which urban social problems are defined and solved, and via these processes to analyse the roles ascribed to professionals. You will also follow the evolvement of the various definitions, solutions and roles and to place these in a comparative European context. You will further acquire the academic knowledge, professional attitudes and research skills needed to play an active and/or research role in this field. The Program is competence-based, problem-oriented and highly interdisciplinary. The program is directed towards people who work or wants to work in various fields of social work.
