Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have become one of the key factors in global development. A rapid expansion of infrastructure, as well as services and applications, have made ICTs an essential part of contemporary societies. ICT for Development (ICT4D) is a fairly new, interdisciplinary field that explores the use of technological innovations in the areas of socio-economic, cultural and political development. The master’s programme at Stockholm University, applies a rights-based approach to development, with emphasis on environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The overall purpose of the programme is to foster knowledgeable and responsible Change Agents for the development field. We target individuals around the world who are involved in development work and/or wish to improve their understanding of ICT4D. Graduates will find positions in international organizations, NGOs, government agencies and global businesses. Graduates may also enter Ph.D. programmes and pursue a research career. During the first year of the two-year programme, we build a solid theoretical and practical ground to stand on. As a student, you will learn about the theories of development and the technologies of today. You will practice research methods and project management, and you will also examine cases of ICT development projects. During the second year, you will deepen your knowledge and refine your skills by examining four specific areas more closely: e-business, e-governance, e-health, and e-learning. You will write a thesis in one of these areas. The programme runs exclusively online and relies substantially on student activity, collaboration and reflective writing. Development of the programme has been sponsored by The Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions (Spider), based at DSV, Stockholm University.
