This programme prepares students for careers as professional translators and for advanced academic study. The programme provides skills in translating non-literary texts in various areas in compliance with the current requirements for professional translation from the indicated source language. You will acquire enhanced ability to analyse and review texts on the basis of situation, function and style. The programme will also provide you with advanced knowledge about translation theory and research in this area, sound knowledge of terminology management as well as knowledge about and practical experience of how to make effective use of relevant aids. During the programme theoretical elements alternate with more practical ones. The theoretical elements include for instance translation theory, textual analysis and non-literary translation, including terminological theory and terminology management. The practical elements will involve practice translation from your source language, appraisal of translations, information searches, etc. The working and professional conditions for translators are also analysed and discussed. Obligatory courses in the Theory of Science and scientific English are also included. The programme offers two possibilities to complete an independent degree project during the fourth semester. You may either complete an advanced translation task combined with a scholarly analysis or write a thesis. The programme is offered with different source languages, varying from year to year. Language combination possible are Swedish into English, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese and Chinese into Swedish. A total of 30 higher education credits (HEC) may be awarded for optional courses. You can choose courses from those offered by TÖI or courses at other departments, which will enable you to tailor your own individual programme. If you have taken undergraduate courses in a language other than the main language of the programme you may, on certain conditions, also include translation from this language in your master’s degree. In this case you will receive a degree certificate that specifies translation from two languages.
